Welcome Aultman College Alumni!  Whether you graduated from the Aultman School of Nursing, the Aultman School of Radiology or Aultman College, you are now officially a member of the Aultman College Alumni Association.  The goal of this organization is provide graduates with opportunities to connect with former classmates, partake in networking and professional development events and be part of the exciting changes taking place at Aultman College. Take the first step now by submitting a news update about your career or personal life or checking out the Aultman College Facebook page.  Then consider coming to an Alumni Association meeting.  Meetings are open and all members are welcome and encouraged to attend!  For questions or suggestions for alumni events, please email the Alumni Relations Coordinator at alumni@aultmancollege.edu or call 330-363-1178.

Aultman College Recognizes Outstanding Alumni

 The Aultman College Alumni Association held its Annual 50-Year/Spring Dinner on Friday, April 25 at Skyland Pines. Four outstanding alumni were each presented with awards for their dedication and commitment along with contributions to their profession during and after graduation from Aultman College and Aultman Hospital School of Nursing.

 

Kristen Beichler ’05                                                            

Distinguished Modern Alumna Award

After graduating from Aultman Hospital School of Nursing in 2005, Kristen Beichler began her nursing career in the Emergency Department at Aultman Hospital. She was promoted to a Patient Care Specialist in 2010 and after receiving her BSN from Ohio University in 2012, Kristen was hired as an Assistant Nurse Manager in the ER. 

Kristen is a current member of the Acute Stroke Team, has served on the Shared Decision Making Committee, volunteers for Safety First, is involved in planning family events for her co-workers and is also active in volunteering at her son’s school. 

This past February, Kristen traveled to Honduras with co-workers to evaluate and implement changes in triage and the Emergency Department at the hospital in Santa Rose de Copan.

Karen Toohey ’59                                                              

Contributing Alumna Award

Upon graduation in 1959 from Aultman Hospital School of Nursing, Karen worked for Aultman Hospital. She then worked for several physicians, the Stark County Chapter of the American Red Cross, worked in industrial nursing and retired from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.  

Karen has been active with the Aultman College Alumni Association serving as President in 1967 and on the Board of Directors.  During her term as president, the chapel in Morrow House was dedicated in honor of Reverend Dennis W. Foreman. Due to remodeling in Morrow House, Karen became an advocate for the relocation of the chapel to Main 3. 

She has been an integral part of creating the Class of 1959 Scholarship for Aultman College students and was instrumental in bridging the transition of Aultman Hospital School of Nursing into Aultman College in 2004. 

Karen was previously a member of Quota Club of Canton and North Canton Rotary.  Since retirement she travels, gardens and participates in "Silver Sneakers".  In addition, she gives back to her alma mater by contributing to the Aultman College Science Lab Project, serves on the Alumni Board and volunteers in The Shoppes at Aultman, gift shop.   

Dr. Perri (Jackson) Bomar ’62                                                        

Outstanding Alumna Award

Perri Bomar graduated from Aultman Hospital School of Nursing in 1962 and went on to receive her BSN from The University of Akron in 1970.  Perri continued her education and graduated in 1972 with her MSN from Case Western Reserve-Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and in 1983 with her PhD from The University of Akron. She went on to complete post-doctoral study on cardiovascular and health promotion research at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Nursing. 

Perri held several faculty positions throughout her career.  Her teaching expertise includes maternity nursing, family health nursing, health promotion, nursing research, community-based participatory research (CBPR) and transcultural nursing.  Dr. Bomar continues to serve as a professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and was appointed in 2008 as distinguished visiting professor at Chiba University School of Nursing in Japan.  She continues to be active as a consultant in nursing and scholarly writing.   

Perri is a long time member of Sigma Theta Tau, International Nursing Honor Society and others. She was awarded the Distinguished Family Nursing Award in 2005 by the International Family Nurses and has authored three nursing textbooks, numerous articles and has given many peer-reviewed research presentations.  Perri also served as the Editor-in-Chief to the Journal of Nursing and Human Sciences, an international nursing journal.  Socially, Dr. Bomar enjoys travelling with her husband, Guy, and belongs to a ladies’ book club, a Bible study class and a writing club.

                                                                                              

Rozlyn E. Messerly ’47                                                    

Lifetime Achievement Award

Developed by the Aultman College Board of Directors as a way to honor an individual that has contributed a “lifetime” of service to Aultman College this inaugural award was presented to Mrs. Roslyn E. Messerly during the Aultman College 2014 Annual Spring Dinner.

Roz graduated from Aultman Hospital School of Nursing in 1947 and was hired immediately after graduation to work in the operating room of Aultman Hospital. She is remembered fondly by past graduates as both a demanding and caring operating room faculty member known for creating rich and rigorous learning opportunities for Aultman Hospital School of Nursing students.  She went on to further her education at The University of Akron and left Aultman in the mid 70’s to become the Dean of the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing program at Kent State University, Tuscarawas campus, a position she retired from after 20 years. She is a founding board member for Aultman College, has been instrumental in the accreditation process for the college as well as helping to align the alumni from the School of Nursing into Aultman College.
